The Eagles Forum, a grouping of professionals attracted to the social democratic philosophy, is calling for an issue-based, policy-focused campaign in the run-up to the 2020 general elections, as it congratulates former President John Mahama on his election as the flag bearer of the NDC.
In a statement signed by its Executive Secretary, Linus Labik, the group said it is hopeful that Mr. Mahama’s “rich political experience over the years, will be brought to bear on the 2020 presidential campaign process”.
The statement called on all actors in the 2020 political game, to conduct their campaigns devoid of personal attack and rancour so as to further enrich the country’s democratic process, especially in the contest to elect a president for Ghana.
The group described the landslide victory of Mr Mahama in his party’s presidential primary as an indication of the overwhelming endorsement by the rank and file of the party, “for him to lead them into victory in the 2020 presidential elections”.
The statement also congratulated the other six contestants who lost to Mr Mahama, on their “active participation and heartwarming congratulatory messages to the victor”, noting that their involvement has further contributed to the entrenchment of the internal democratic processes of the NDC.
The group is of the view that such show of magnanimity will further strengthen the unity of the party, as it prepares towards the 2020 presidential election.
The Eagles Forum promised to support the NDC, as a party, and its presidential candidate in formulating and projecting policies that will enrich the political debate and position the NDC as a truly social democratic party.
Social democratic principles underpin the group’s policies and programmes and they are willing and ready to engage the party and its flag bearer on all these fronts for the wellbeing of all Ghanaians whilst strengthening the frontiers of social democratic ideology in Ghana.
The group said it expects to see the flag bearer bring on board the best and brightest in the party, including all other contestants and their followers to further strengthen the unity of the party, as they move towards recapturing power in 2020.
The Eagles Forum offers professionals attracted to the social democratic philosophy the platform to express the views through advocacy, intellectual debates, lectures, publications of policy positions and the establishment of a strong relationship with like-minded groups within and outside the country.
